Beschreibung

The article discusses the occurence of the literary motives 'service' (dienst) ans 'reward' (lôn in the sense of sexual abandonment or unification) in courtly medieval love-literature. While the Minnesang-lyrics focus on the never ending and often self-destructive 'dienst' offered to a noble lady and do not mention 'lôn', the romances and epica in which the couples are married and have offspring usually do not include the idea of 'dienst'. But there are some short narratives ('Mären' or 'Novellen') which are exceptional in this respect: they combine both motives, the 'dienst' and the 'lôn'. They also depict the mistress, who is the target of the service, as a married woman. The article attempts to explain this fact as a function of the incompatibility of the motives 'dienst' ans 'lôn': the lady is not inhibited to reward the knight because of her marriage, but she is married because her 'lôn' would (and does) inevitably destroy the 'dienst'.
